Pulteney Bridge is quite something. It is supposedly built in the style of Ponte Vecchio and you can definitely see it, but on the bridge you would think you were on another street. I found a antique map shop on the bridge, and was pleasantly surprised to see that New Zealand was among the collection (the oldest of NZ I could find was 135 years - not bad).
I also discovered a second obelisk in Bath. This one was erected to commemorate the return to health of the Prince of Orange after drinking the waters of Bath (1734). To those of you who are interested, I now know that the first obelisk was erected to commemorate the visit of the Frederick the Prince of Wales (1738). Obelisks were obviously the fashion in the 1730s.
Holburne Museum, like everything else here, is rather beautiful.
This is on the Sydney Gardens. Apparently Jane Austen would stay here, and frequently walked the gardens.
Believe it or not, this is on Pulteney Bridge.
Pulteney Bridge from the 'outside'.
The Prince of Orange's obelisk.
A few more shots of Bath because it is so gorgeous.
Wow I LOVE that bridge - it looks amazing! :-)
ReplyDeleteI am fortunate as in our bridge engineering class we get to chose a bridge to analyse. Sadly this one is off limits, but there are plenty of others around Bath and Bristol to investigate.
